Probably the best driver of the golf ball on the planet, Mcilroy utilizes a free-flowing, powerful swing motion. At 5'8 and 160 pounds, he regularly flies his driver well over 300 yards. Mcilroy utilizes the ground and his body rotation better than just about anyone in the modern game.

He keeps his right arm in front of his chest for most of his backswing a la Tiger before dropping it in transition while squatting and rotating extremely aggressively. If you have problem with Tiger's "dipping," then you should have a BIG problem with the same issue for Mcilroy. 

Max is a 15 handicap who gets to play between 15 and 20 rounds per year. I would classify his motion as a decent player's version of the classic over-the-top swing. His good shots were pull fades and his bad shots were duck hooks, huge slices, tops, and even shanks.

What you'll see in this video is a before and after of a couple hours of work together. We tightened his back swing and worked hard on his wrist angles on the downswing to give him a better chance of delivering the club from the inside.

Plagued by a hook early on in his career, Mr Hogan went on to coin the phrase "dig it out of the dirt" with with his relentless work ethic and his determination to build a perfect swing. He had some of the most aggressive leg and pivot action of all time. His free-flowing, dynamic motion is polished with one of the most recognizable finishes in the game.

Despite being in a terrible car accident in the middle of his career and suffering through pain for the rest of his life, Hogan totaled 64 PGA TOUR wins including 9 major championships.

In this video, we look at how the club-shaft should respond in transition. This isn't as much of a deal-breaker as something like proper sequencing, but is extremely beneficial to both the average and high-level player.

You will rarely find a swing where the shaft of the club points inside of the target-line at left arm parallel in the downswing. Phil Mickelson is one of the few good enough to use this difficult technique. Otherwise, good players "shallow" or "flatten" the shaft in transition before steepening it onto the ball and exiting well left through impact. Check out Ben Hogan, Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka, and Jim Furyk for examples of this motion.

You won't see another swing like this on tour. Before turning his chest at all in his backswing, Johnson first externally rotates his right arm and begins to bow his left wrist. He keeps his arms perfectly in front of himself despite having one of the longest backswings on tour. He is most recognized for his extremely bowed left hand and shut club face at the top of his swing. He puts himself in a position that requires an extremely aggressive lower body rotation in order to not hit the ball dead left. This is an extremely athletic motion that requires a high level of strength and fitness.

Scott gets to play every once in a while on business trips. We worked together for 30 minutes a couple of weeks ago and the results were just too good to not share. With a big setup change and a focus on tightening things up at the top, he went from shanking, topping, and hitting big slices to hitting it pretty much flush each time. It wasn't the most complex lesson but it was much needed.

In this video, we focus on the positions of the lead and trail wrists throughout the swing. As you'll see, certain wrist angles lead to pulling the arms down and steepening the shaft in transition. On the other hand, certain angles lead to proper body rotation and a more simple squaring of the clubface through impact. Many different patterns have been utilized by the greats but some ways are simply easier to manage than others.

Arguably the best player of all time, Tiger Woods has already collected 79 PGA TOUR wins including 14 majors. In his swing, we will see pivot action with aggression and rotation reminiscent of Ben Hogan. Tiger keeps his right arm pinched in front of his chest throughout his entire swing -- a feat that takes serious strength and control, especially as he transitions from backswing to downswing. Picked on for his "head-dipping" as his career has gone on, we see here that this is actually just a result of his incredible leg and pivot action.

After taking a couple decades off from the game, Mike now has the time to get back into it. He got a new set of clubs (hybrids!) and came out for some lessons before hitting the course for the first time. Mike had the classic open club-face and out-to-in path leading to pulls, slices, and shanks. I see this pattern almost everyday from my beginner/high-handicap students. Fortunately, we made great progress in our first session and Mike is that much closer to playing some decent golf.

With one of the most unique actions on tour, Garcia has been a fixture in the top 20 in the world rankings since he jumped on the scene at the PGA Championship at Medinah at age 19. Like most, he been through ups and downs both on and off the course, but his swing hasn't really ever changed. He combines tremendous lag and width on his downswing with extreme shallowing of the club. He is one of a few players in the world who utilizes a true shaft plane approach at impact. This is a swing that's not even worth imitating but one we can learn a lot from nonetheless. 

In this video, we'll look at some examples of what moves first during both the takeaway and the downswing. As you'll see, there's a big difference in sequencing between your average player and a touring pro. Proper sequencing is one of the most important aspects of a functional golf swing. Without it, you basically don't have a chance to be good.

"Slammin Sammy" used one of the silkiest swings of all time to win a record 82 PGA TOUR events. With a combination of free-flowing hip rotation and extreme flexibility, Snead's motion looks much different than what you might see at a modern day tour event. After a full back swing with impressive wrist angles, Snead immediately externally rotates both legs before snapping his left leg back a la Tiger and rotating the club well around to the left. This swing is simply a thing of beauty.
